Can you use OpenBSD?
My first project was to determine if you could use OpenBSD to do things that a normal computer user would do. The project had an ability to test my patience at times. Things that would usually be easy on a computer turned into a major project. But there was a satisfaction in finally getting that USB drive to mount, finally getting the drivers to install, and finally getting the internet to connect. I was able to mostly make the operating system usable, although it still had some issues with lag.
I do think that there is a point to OpenBSD. It is a bare bones operating system and if I knew what I was doing, I probably could have made it into something. And I didn’t even know what I was doing, yet I was able to get the internet to work and install a modern GUI from almost nothing thanks to the help from the community. Doing this project taught me a lot about how an operating system works and all that is behind it. You can view the full presentation here.
How hard is it to make a website?
My second project was to determine how hard it is to make a website. This project was far easier for me, yet I still think that It was informative. I went through the process of creating a website, which involved buying a domain, hosting it on a server, and then putting stuff on it. I was able to do code some HTML, but since it has been a while since I worked with the language, my homepage was rather simple. Installing Nextcloud and WordPress was challenging during some aspects. However, I was very happy with the results. With Nextcloud, I was able too chat with my friends on a site that I created and do other stuff with the Google Drive/Discord alternative. WordPress was also fun in that it made it considerably easier to make blog posts. I look forward to doing more random things with this website. You can view the full presentation here.
